MEMORIAM
Born in 1943 in Birmingham, Alabama, Karl was educated in public schools in Birmingham and graduated from Shades Valley High School in 1961 as both a Merit Scholarship Finalist and a Varsity Basketball Player. He attended the University of Virginia as a DuPont Scholar, graduating from its Undergraduate School in 1965 and its Law School in 1968.
He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega. In addition, he received a Master’s Degree in Tax Law from the University of Alabama in 1983. Karl worked for Gulf Power, serving as Director of Employee Relations and Governmental Affairs, before moving into the private practice of law in 1983, with an emphasis on corporate law, taxation, and estate planning. He was an active Rotarian, a proud Paul Harris Fellow, and a former President of the Five Flags Rotary Club.
He served many years as an adjunct professor at the University of West Florida and Pensacola Junior College. He served on the Santa Rosa Island Authority for 12 years, four as chairman and seven as vice chairman. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, the Florida Bar Association, Escambia-Santa Rosa Bar Association, and the Alabama Bar Association. He also served on the boards of Synovus Bank Pensacola, J. W. Cannon Farms, and the Pensacola Sports Association Foundation.
He has served as President of Rebellaires and Saints and Sinners, as well as a Director of the Order of Tristan. With his wife, Nancy, by his side, he enjoyed social events as a Fiesta of Five Flags knight, weekend trips as a founding member of the Baylen Street Social Club, and beach days closer to home with the unofficial White Island Basking and Social Club.
Karl’s wit offered these organizations a willing writer for their tableau skits; his friends a ready companion for an afternoon of golf; and a quick flirt for his favorite ladies. He was the very best “go-fer” when it came to a project; he knew where to find the best pastries or ice cream; he loved good coffee and bad wine; and he mastered sneaking out of church after communion to make a Sunday tee time.
Karl was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy Cannon Boyles; his brother, Walter; and his parents, Elizabeth and Winston. He is survived by his four children, Deborah Della Rosa (Brian) of Moorestown, NJ; Karl Winston “Win” Boyles, III, Pensacola; Joseph Boyles (Laura) of Pensacola; and William Boyles (Dana) of New Orleans; his eight grandchildren, Sofia, Cannon, Michael, Sarah, Tilly, Bill, Oliver, and Violet; his dear partner of recent years, Colleen Rogers; and his many friends.
